Shadows of Silence in the Forests of Hell by Brandon Sanderson Book Review

A brief synopsis of Shadows: Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell by Brandon Sanderson is a dark fantasy novella set in the Cosmere universe. It follows Silence Montane, an innkeeper in the deadly Forests of Hell, where ghostly Shades hunt those who break certain taboos. By day, she runs her waystop, but by night, she is a ruthless bounty hunter, secretly collecting bounties to protect her family. When a dangerous group of criminals arrives at her inn, Silence must navigate treacherous threats—both human and supernatural—to survive. The story blends horror, suspense, and action, showcasing Sanderson’s signature worldbuilding and gripping storytelling.

With that synopsis, this should be a really exciting story, at least that's what I expected coming into this. Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell has an exciting premise, a tense atmosphere, and some great worldbuilding, but ultimately, it felt like it ended just as it was getting started. Silence Montane is a strong lead, and her double life as an innkeeper and bounty hunter is intriguing, but I never felt like I really knew her. The Shades, with their well-defined rules, were the real highlight—Sanderson’s magic systems always stand out, and this one was no exception.

The problem? There just wasn’t enough time to fully explore this world or its characters. It’s gripping while it lasts, but I was left wanting more depth, especially from Silence and those around her. I’d love to see this setting expanded into something longer, but as it stands, it was enjoyable—just not as satisfying as I’d hoped. While it doesn’t have the depth of Sanderson’s longer works, it’s an engaging, atmospheric read that kept me hooked from start to finish. Hopefully, this isn’t the last time we visit the Forests of Hell!
